In October 2025, The Murdoch Center Foundation was thrilled to receive a substantial grant from the Wake Electric Corporation. This grant was specifically awarded to fund playground equipment for the two Murdoch Developmental Center PATH Group Homes (Partners in Autism Treatment and Habilitation) located in Granville and Franklin Counties.
Wake Electric demonstrates its dedication to community improvement through the quarterly WECare program, which provides grant funding to non-profit organizations within Wake Electric’s service territory. The Wake Electric Foundation, a not-for-profit entity, aims to enhance economic infrastructure, encourage job creation, support charitable organizations, and address emergency needs for individuals within its service area. Wake Electric’s reputation for community involvement is further solidified by its consistent support through grant and scholarship programs, helping to invest in the communities where its members and employees live and work.
The grant received was used to replace worn and outdated playground equipment at the PATH group homes. These homes are modest and feature large yards, providing an ideal setting for outdoor play. Many of the children residing in these homes require dedicated playground structures, such as swings, bars, and slides. Due to frequent behavioral challenges, it can be difficult for these children to safely visit public parks. Therefore, having outdoor play facilities at home creates a safer and more comfortable environment for them.
Staff at the PATH group homes actively work on community exposure and building social skills among the children. However, some children derive the greatest benefit from the tranquility of playing outdoors at home, where they have ample space to roam and can be supervised without concerns about conflicts with others. The introduction of new playground equipment offers numerous advantages, including:
- Physical Health: Activities like climbing and swinging foster improved motor skills, coordination, and overall fitness.
- Emotional and Mental Well-being: Creative play builds confidence, reduces stress, and encourages healthy sleep patterns through exposure to daylight.
- Cognitive Development: Problem-solving skills, imagination, and reasoning are enhanced during outdoor play.
- Social Development: Teamwork, conflict resolution, and communication abilities are strengthened as children interact with peers and staff.
- Staff Support: Improved facilities help reduce agitation in children and promote restful sleep, making it easier for staff to provide effective care.
The installation of new playground equipment will provide lasting benefits to all children served by the PATH group homes for years to come. The Murdoch Center Foundation remains deeply grateful to Wake Electric for this generous donation and their ongoing commitment to enriching the lives of those in their community.
